The school’s 12th Triathlon, sponsored by the leading international corporate services provider for the fourth consecutive year, was the biggest and best yet, with all 120 competitors completing the course.
Pupils aged 11 and under participated in a mass outdoor warm-up, before dividing into groups and making their way to the start line. The under 9 age group swam three lengths of the College pool, cycled 1,000 metres on grass and ran 600 metres, whereas the under 11s swam eight lengths, cycled 2,000 metres and ran 1,200 metres.
All participants wore race t-shirts supplied by SMP and were presented with a special commemorative medal at the post-event ceremony.
SMP also invited its Charity of the Year for 2019, Hospice Isle of Man, to come along and raise money and awareness of the vital work that it does on the Island.
SMP Partners Managing Director Mark Denton said: ‘The Buchan Triathlon is a fantastic event and always brings lots of smiles and laughter to the children and spectating mums and dads. At SMP we are passionate about finding ways to support our local community and initiatives like this, which encourage young people to get active, try new activities and appreciate being outside in the fresh air, is a great fit for us.
‘We’re delighted Hospice were able to use this opportunity to raise additional funds. It’s an organisation close to our hearts and as our Charity of the Year for 2019, we’re committed to raising as much money as we can throughout 2019.’
Cliff Dunn, Head of Boys’ PE & Games, added: ‘The Buchan Triathlon is always a fantastic , social day which brings the community together and tests the young pupil’s stamina, speed and strength. The aim was simply to complete the course, and although finishing positions were not recorded, the natural competitiveness of the children shone through - resulting in some dramatic sprint finishes!
‘A big thank you to SMP for its continued support of our fun day, we are so grateful.’
